Quick - with less than 24 hours to go, post your predictions about Iowa (winners, losers, aftermath). Not based on who you want to win, but what you think will actually happen.
Mine:
Dem: Obama and Hillary functionally tie with a distant Edwards. Gopster: McCain/Romneybot wins with Huckleberry 3 points behind.
Upshot: Hillary & McCain win New Hampshire.

rommney then will get wiped out in subsequent primarys leaving a straight mccain thompson ticket.
gulliani is out to dry
huck could make it in Ipwa but he's a goner in NH.

since you ask I predict nothing conclusive will be established in IA/NH for either party. The super primaries will rule the day.
I might add that our presidential candidates are picked by a handful of folks in two of the whitest states in the US and some people are much more distraught and passionate over the BCS bowl system failing pick a national college football champion fairly enough.

If Iowa wants to have a primary, fine; but this caucus crap is bogus.
Giuliani will be the Repub nominee, ultimately; tomorrow, in Iowa - Obama, Edwards, Clinton. And: Huckster; Romney and McCain.

The notion of a grumpy old men ticket of McCain and Thompson is laughable. The VP candidate for the GOP will probably be Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty.

Dems: Edwards will pull out a victory with a big enough edge to surprise the pundits.
GOP: Romney will eek it out over Huckabee by a slim margin.

I think you will hit 4-5 dead on. But I still think these two primary/caucuses won't determine the candies.
They will be too close and there is too much weight in the super primary.

My prediction is that the Orange Bowl will be interrupted by a news flash announcing the winners - and millions of Americans will complain.
My second prediction is that the winner will not be the guy who finishes first.

Agreed. Even the convention is in his home state. All he has to do is fix that bridge.

Hah! Pull a sword from the stone.
The convention is here because of Norm Coleman, most likely.
Pawlenty will get savaged for leaving his broken bridge to campaign for McCain in New Hampshire - and then running off to the Canadian Arctic with Will Steger!

Being competent in governance hasn't been part of the Republican criteria for candidates for a long time.

No, the only thing the repukes are focused on is how to lower taxes for the richest people in America while cutting public services and breaking the bank on their wars.

Iowa hgas suprised us before.
John Kerry and John Edwards came from nowhere and did well there in 2004, despite the expectations of a Dean win.
Gore Beat Bradley in 2000, despite predictions of a Bradley win.
Robertson flew to a second place spot behind Dole in 1988.
Hart became a contender in 1984 after a supirsing 2nd place finish.
Will there be a surprise from the second teir tonight, in either party?

Obama, Hillary, Edwards
Huckabee, Romney, Paul
I think if any of these have a chance to trend upwards, it'll be Paul. Events like the caucus are ripe for his "campaign" to overwhelm.
I put that word in quotes because I don't really think anyone, including RP, has control over his supporters. Ineffective in a convention setting, but could be quite effective in Iowa. To put it another way, I don't think he'll have a GOTV problem. His people may not be numerically superior, but damned if they're not motivated.

"fred thompson the next president..."
He hit 14%. But the story is still Huckabee with a solid win. McCain, despite all the endorsements, finished fourth. And Ron Paul beat Rudy Giuliani, taking 10% of the vote. It means at least 10% of the Iowa GOP thinks the war in Iraq is a Custer-fuck.
The bigger news is on the Democratic side, where Barack Obama was able to get his troops into the caucuses. Six point lead over Hillary and Edwards with very few delegates left to pick.

Those were my exact picks. I dunno tho if Paul has any advantage in IA as opposed to any ordinary primary. But I agree his fans are THE motivated and can't be controlled. That might be a good thing.
Doesn't it seem like the energy is really low amongst all of the other candidates?

Hart became a contender in 1984 after a supirsing 2nd place finish.
The one and only time we ever went to the caucus was '84; a friend of ours was a huge Hart fan, so we went.
How times have changed - I don't recall a single candidate, big or small, visiting our town; it just wasn't that big a deal.
When we got home afterwards, I guess we could have turned on the TV and watched Nightline; maybe Koppel would have done a show on the events in Iowa.
But now - good lord, every news outlet in the hemisphere is down there! And on TV, it's caucus wallpaper.
I suppose the difference is - now they have all that TV airtime to fill, so they make a big deal out of anything to keep the cameras rolling.
People in Iowa are smart; the caucus is dumb. Kill the beast.

So far, it's Huckabee, Romney, Thompson on the Gop side and Obama, Edwards and Hillary on the Dem side. And Hillary and Edwards are essentially tied...
