Four of the seven Republican criminal state district judges who lost their jobs Tuesday night didn't show up for work today as other judges presided over their dockets.
"I'm sure they're depressed about what happened," said state District Judge Mark Kent Ellis, the only incumbent to remain on the bench in the criminal courthouse after a near Democratic sweep of Harris County judicial posts.
"It's not unusual for a judge to take the day off after the election, especially if it was a devastating loss," Ellis said. "I wouldn't be too hard on people who just found out last night that they just lost their job."
Ellis spent some of the morning presiding over plea bargains for Caprice Cosper, a courthouse favorite, who was voted out 48 percent to 52 percent...

WACO — Baylor University officials said they are investigating an apparent noose hanging from a tree the day Barack Obama was elected the nation's first black president.
Campus authorities also responded to a barbecue pit fire where several Obama campaign signs were believed to have been burned, interim President David E. Garland said.
"These events are deeply disturbing to us and are antithetical to the mission of Baylor University," Garland said in a statement Wednesday. "We categorically denounce and will not tolerate racist acts of any kind on our campus."
On Tuesday afternoon at the world's largest Baptist university, some students notified officials that a rope resembling a noose was on a campus tree, Garland said. Campus police took the rope and are investigating.
"We believe that the incidents on our campus yesterday were irresponsible acts committed by a few individuals," Garland said...
