Polls opened here about ten minutes ago - to long lines. L.A. County has 4.8 million registered voters and is expecting an 80% turnout (you read that right). A lot of vote by mail ballots didn't make it to voters in time to be returned by mail, so those will be dropped at polling places today (including mine).

It's raining here in SoCal - not unusual for this time of year, but unusual enough. Will be interesting to see if it has any effect.

In Oregon, we all vote by mail. In theory.

Alot of Democratic votes were returned because of the lack of stamps....

My barber was telling me that he was watching Obama's acceptance speech at the dem convention. When it was over, he turned to his wife and said "We're gonna get a bunch of free stuff..."

Wait till I tell him his mortgage is covered and he won't have to buy any gas. Boy will he be relieved...

It'd sure be nice to get some free shit after tqking it in the ass the past 8 years. However, with the mess Bush and McCain are leaving behind there won't be too many freebies, huh?

McCain's still alive. All he has to do is win California and he's right back in it.

Doesn't Ahnold have any coattails there?

I'm in King County, WarriorGram, and today was our last chance to vote at polling places. I was in line at 6:30 a.m. in the rain and buoyed by the upbeat energy and excitement. I'm so glad I was able to experience this watershed moment with others. Truly inspiring!

Interesting stat: About 30% of registered voters in Orange County voted in this election, as compared with 65% in the 2004 election. Guess they knew the Republicans weren't going to pull it out.

It's estimated that 72% of registered L.A. County voters came out today. Amazing turn out.

If every voter in California who voted for any candidate for President other than Obama voted in favor of Prop 8, that would mean that approximately 1.25 million Obama supporters voted in favor of Prop 8. Of course, we know those numbers are actually higher.

I know you like to frame this as a BA thing, but Prop 8 enjoyed bipartisan support. Had a couple of judges not legislated from the bench in May, the margin would have been even higher...

I would say so. Having to pay for a stamp is equivalent to being charged a poll tax. All of the return envelopes should have been postage-paid.

Gordon Smith threw in the towel this afternoon after it appeared that Jeff Merkley had won the contested Senate seat in Oregon. That brings the filibuster-proof Senate one seat closer. Late-counted votes from Multnomah County appear to have made this race a lot closer initially than it eventually turned out...

FiveThirtyEight.com says the Alaska vote tallies are very screwy. Not that the polls were drastically wrong, but turnout, as measured by the votes tallied, was substantially lower than than four years ago, even with Palin on the GOP ticket. Speculates Nate Silver, this is one race where the Democrats got a little too cocksure about winning and decided they didn't need to go to the polls. Either that, or there is a large pool of early votes that haven't been counted yet. Before you get excited, though, Silver speculates those votes may have come in from the Alaskan hinterlands and may favor Stevens. He better hope so; his lead is less than 4,000 votes.

By the way, Alaska has 55,000 absentee ballots, or a fifth of the vote left to count. It's not over yet...

Given that something as controversial as Prop. 8 won't go unchallenged, you can count on a long battle - and the anti-Prop. 8 side has some good arguments, some of which are going to get down and dirty with the separation of church and state (not to mention equal treatment under the law). If you see marriage for what it is, a contract between two people concerning property, then you realize that the state can't really "ban" it no matter who it's between provided they are adults able to enter into a legally binding contract. It's when god gets brought into the picture that trouble ensues.

How is it that the Morman Church (or whatever the hell it's called) could give $15-$20M to the Prop. 8(h)aters and still maintain its tax exempt status?

A lot depends on who did the giving. The Church probably gave no money outright, being mindful of preserving its tax-exempt status, but that doesn't mean that the Mormon faithful didn't give...at the behest of the Church elders.

I think we could enact a Constitutional amendment to forbid Mormons from marrying in California. As Cubbie himself will insist, anything the voters add to the California Constitution may never be challenged in court...

No, it's a BS thing. As was Plessey versus Ferguson. Eventually all laws that get concocted in the narrow minds of bigoted little persons get struck down by History...

The Alaska election just took a turn towards the Democrats, as Mark Begich made up 3300 votes on Ted Stevens to pull into the lead after the first 15,000 early votes were counted. There are 35,000 to go, and those are also expected to lean Begich's way.

If it holds, that's 58-40...

It took long enough, but Ted Stevens is now 2,400 votes behind Mark Begich, with about 15,000 ballots left to examine. This one looks like it's about over...
