Of course they are.

Wrong, Mal. In race after race the Tea Partyers are putting up candidates AGAINST the party-line Republicans, or against both GOP and Dem candidates: note the Texas gubernatorial race. A woman there who is a Tea Party third party candidate has 12% of the vote last poll and is expected to send the race into a run-off.

This is going on in many places. Particularly as the unpopular Dems are now vulnerable to someone ---- and that someone may not be a GOP candidate, at least not a party-line, backroom candidate.

I can't understand your point: why would you think the Tea Party people are Republicans when they SAY they aren't? I re-registered right out of the Republican Party in 2006, to Independent registration. I'm not a Republican anymore. I got tired of the losing wars, the perversions, all the mess Bush made.

Lots of people have done that. That's why the GOP is terrified of its own shrinking membership.

I don't know, there aren't many races at this point, just special elections.

Come this summer, that's a good question: how many Tea Partyers will rebel against the GOP and run separate candidates?

It is of course true that the GOP is dying to co-opt the Tea Party movement! And they may have some success --- that's what happened with Scott Brown, who ran on the Republican ticket, but never happened to mention it, ever......stealth campaigning.

It's pure populism. I suppose it'll fizzle out like the Perot thing, but we'll see.

Phebe, I believe you to be wrong. With the wins in VA. NJ and Ma, it shows you are wrong. They all ran on the Republican ticket. I know that democrats are still crying about that, but they have to learn to face facts.

I think this is going to be a turning point for all the little tea parties. Sarah says she wants them to merge with the Republicans and if they truly love Sarah they'll do her bidding. I'm hoping they don't love her that much.

Tea Party convention raises questions about future

snip.

Supporters of the convention to be held at the Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center say the national conference will build alliances across state lines, strengthening into a force that can press the Democratic and Republican parties to change their ways or face a threat to their existence.

Ah, happy words, how I wish the existing parties would face a threat to their existence.

But if Sarah says no, I guess it's no.

I just looked up their Bold & Fresh tour site and they've got rock star ticket prices. I sure hope these poor people are not charging their tickets and then losing their jobs and losing their homes and good credit. OK, that's a worst case scenario. Or best depending on your point of view.

$60, $85 and $125 to see a sexual predator and an ex-alkie.

Come to NY and I can get you tickets for "South Pacific" for that kind of money, it's got great music and the orchestra to play it and it's criminal-free.

We've got a bunch like Hannity and Beck, but you don't have to pay to see them. They're usually lurking on the number 6 train.

Tea Party Convention’s Keynote and Other Events Will Be Televised

snip.

The revolution will be televised.

Planners of the National Tea Party Convention, billed as a coming together for the conservative grassroots groups who sprang up in anti-stimulus protests last year, announced late Sunday that they would broadcast main parts of the convention, including the keynote by former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin on Saturday night.

The organizers suggested that they saw the broadcast as a solution to some of the criticism leveled at the convention over the last several weeks, as sponsors and participants have pulled out and grassroots tea party activists have complained that the ticket price — $549 — is too expensive for members of a movement that holds fiscal conservatism as a core value.

snip.

And Tea Party Nation was criticized for limiting access to only those news organizations that it believes have given it “fair” coverage, a small group reported to be Fox News, the Wall Street Journal, BreitbartTV, World Net Daily and a few others, although organizers had said they were working to open up the convention to more media.

The announcement said that an internet media company, PJTV, along with Fox News, CNN and Reuters TV, would broadcast “many” of the proceedings of the convention this weekend in Nashville, as well as “special interviews of delegates and speakers.”

snip.

The convention, she said, is sold out with a waiting list of 500 people. As of Monday afternoon, the convention website said there were still banquet-only tickets available for Ms. Palin’s speech.

I read at one of the tea party sites that there are no problems, it's all a liberal media plan to disrupt. We'll see.

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0210/32620.html

Tea Party Convention showdown

snip.

NASHVILLE – Three former allies of the National Tea Party Convention are planning a guerilla press conference near the convention hall Saturday afternoon to highlight what they contend are the organizers’ efforts to hijack the tea party movement.

The three men, Anthony Shreeve, Robert Kilmarx and Mark Herr, are Tennessee tea party activists who were involved in the early stages of planning the convention and say they were pushed out after disputes with lead convention organizers Judson and Sherry Phillips, who contend that they resigned.

The disputes have since gone public and turned ugly. At their press conference – which they plan to hold in the same sprawling hotel convention center that is hosting the convention – the three “intend to challenge [the convention] on all levels,” said Shreeve.

They announced the presser in a Friday night email to local and national reporters covering the convention, though Shreve admits he did not seek permission from the hotel to use the facility. “If they run us out, we will have it in the parking lot,” he said.

A modified American flag, now we're talking.

tennessean

Tea Party convention draws worldwide interest, scrutiny

snip.

There were half a dozen Tea Party rallies in and around Nashville last year and almost all of them drew more people than the 600 who came to the Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center this week for the National Tea Party Convention.

But it's the convention that has drawn the world's attention squarely to Nashville. Hundreds of reporters from every corner of the globe are here today, trying to figure out whether what's happening signals some sort of sea change in the electorate — or just another protest in a season of unrest.

"I've gotten orders for these from Switzerland and France," said downsized auto industry executive Jeffrey Allan McQueen, displaying the modified American flag he hopes will become the new symbol for the movement. The familiar 13-star colonial flags have a Roman numeral II in the center of the stars, signaling a second American revolution. "I'm starting to wonder if there might be a Tea Party brewing overseas."

Very interesting, Patricia.

The Economist is taking the movement fairly seriously....the thing is that it is having some real effects in local elections for Congress, already, so I wonder if the movement may indeed sort itself out.

Needs a leader, of course. So far the Republicans have rather conspicuously failed to co-opt it; that effort will redouble, I'm sure.
