North Beach, Maryland Boycott

On July 10, 2003 the Town Council of North Beach passed an Emergency Resolution to close the public pier during nighttime hours from 11:00 pm to 6:00 am. The measure was passed with no public review or opportunity for comment.

Both the pier and beach are public property. A number of residents in North Beach, Maryland and certain members of the town council blamed the fishermen for the noise and trash problems on the pier and the boardwalk.

Please support our efforts to overturn the resolution and restore full 24-hour access to both the public pier and beach in North Beach. You may cut and paste the petition statement below, or alternately draft a letter of your own.

Dear Mr. Mayor, In response to the closure of the public pier in North Beach to nighttime fishing I hereby state my intention to boycott the town of North Beach including but not limited to commercial businesses, town fairs, festivals and other events hosted by or taking place in North Beach. Maryland. Furthermore, I request that any fees for season passes purchased for access to the pier are promptly refunded to those who request it. The public beach and pier passes were purchased with the expectation of full access to fish or use the public beach and pier 24/7 during the year. It has also been brought to my attention that the town of North Beach relies partially on funding from the State of Maryland as well as other state agencies for projects involving the maintenance and upkeep of public areas and infrastructure. I believe the trust vested in the town of North Beach to manage public property has been abused and would like to protest the virtual lack of notice and manner in which the resolution was passed, specifically, the lack of opportunity for a formal public review and comment period.
